Billionaire Tim Draper Selling Hermosa Beach House for $18.9M

The Hermosa Beach vacation home of venture capital investment ace Tim Draper is one notable new addition to the West Coast open market this spring. The property reached the open market this month with an asking price of $18.9 million, and it’s worth a look for buyers searching out a street-to-sand contemporary in the L.A. region.

The house, custom-built in 2010, is an eye-catching architectural achievement; from the street, is offers timber accents against an overall prairie-meets-modern form; beachside, it works in darker earth tones, a lot of glass, and the suggestion of a pyramid roof. Inside, the residence is as expressive, and the inspiration of Craftsman and Prairie design elements hints at well-established forms of cerebral warmth, though subtly.

The 7,946 square-footer’s primary living area is suitably loftish, with a wall of wood-framed fold-away glass panel doors that open it broadly to its setting and primary context. Beyond this two-level living spot is a stairwell; the staircase features plank hardwood treads and an industrial-inspired balustrade. Materials were carefully chosen, and include walnut floor plank and tile.

For a rambling beachfront two-level, the home’s interior area is considerable, and it works in five bedrooms without breaking a sweat; seven baths support the home. Given the square footage, the extensive list of specialty rooms isn’t terribly surprising; the living style is augmented with a gym, billiards room, and theater, among others. Up top is the spot that will likely be a primary destination for most prospective owners: a rooftop deck that adds 1,400 sq. ft. to the property’s total living areas.
