Castle of the Week: Nizwa Fort in Oman

Nizwa Fort is one of Oman’s most iconic historical landmarks and a remarkable example of traditional Islamic military architecture. Constructed during the 17th century under Imam Sultan bin Saif Al Ya'arubi, the fort was built to protect the inland city of Nizwa, then the political, religious, and commercial center of Oman.

Its most distinctive feature is the massive circular tower, one of the largest in the Arabian Peninsula, measuring nearly 45 meters (148 feet) in diameter and rising above the surrounding oasis and Hajar Mountains. Designed with defense in mind, the fortress includes thick walls, hidden passages, narrow staircases, trap doors, and strategically placed openings for archers and defenders.

Inside, visitors can explore restored rooms, exhibition halls, courtyards, and traditional living quarters that offer insight into Omani history and daily life centuries ago.

Today, Nizwa Fort stands as one of the country's most visited cultural attractions, symbolizing Oman’s resilience, architectural ingenuity, and rich heritage while offering breathtaking panoramic views of the ancient city and its surrounding landscapes.
