Castle of the Week: Walzin Castle in Belgium

Château de Walzin is one of Belgium’s most picturesque castles, dramatically perched atop a steep limestone cliff overlooking the Lesse River near the historic city of Dinant. While the site has been fortified since the Middle Ages, much of the castle seen today reflects extensive renovations and reconstructions carried out during the 19th and early 20th centuries.

Its striking location, rising directly from the rocky cliffs above the river, has made it a favorite subject for painters, photographers, and travelers seeking one of Europe’s most romantic castle landscapes. Unlike many large fortresses built primarily for warfare, Walzin Castle is admired for its blend of defensive heritage and elegant residential architecture, featuring towers, turrets, and terraces that appear to emerge naturally from the surrounding rock.

Though privately owned and not regularly open to the public, the castle remains one of Belgium’s most iconic landmarks, captivating visitors with its fairytale appearance, breathtaking natural setting, and rich connection to the history of the Ardennes region.
