Castle of the Week: Hohensalzburg Fortress in Austria

Hohensalzburg Fortress is one of the largest and best-preserved medieval castles in Europe, towering high above the city of Salzburg, Austria, on the Festungsberg hill.

Built in 1077 by Archbishop Gebhard during the Investiture Controversy, the fortress was designed to protect the powerful prince-archbishops of Salzburg and was expanded over several centuries.

Remarkably, it was never taken by enemy forces, making it a symbol of strength and political power in the region. The fortress combines Romanesque, Gothic, and Renaissance architectural elements, and its interior features richly decorated rooms, medieval weapons, and panoramic viewpoints overlooking the Alps and old town.

Today, Hohensalzburg is one of Austria’s top tourist attractions, offering visitors a dramatic glimpse into medieval life, church authority, and the strategic importance of Salzburg throughout history.
