Famous Castle Of The Week: Neuschwanstein Castle in Germany

We're trying something new here at Castles Unlimited. We're rolling out our Castles of the Week where we highlight a spectacular castle each week that piques our interest. This week, we're highlighting Neuschwanstein Castle, located in Bavaria, Germany.

Neuschwanstein is one of the most iconic and photographed castles in the world, famous for inspiring Disney’s Sleeping Beauty castle. Built in the late 19th century by King Ludwig II, it was intended as a personal retreat and a tribute to the operas of Richard Wagner, rather than a defensive fortress.

Although it looks medieval, it’s actually filled with then-modern technology for its time, including running water, central heating, and even an early telephone system. The castle was never completed. Only about a third of the interior is finished and Ludwig lived there for less than a year before his mysterious death.

Today, it’s one of Germany’s top tourist attractions, drawing over a million visitors annually for its dramatic Alpine setting, fairytale architecture, and romantic history.
